Year 4 Dives into 'Skype a Scientist' Adventures
Every year, Year 4 participates in ‘Skype a Scientist’ during their How the World Works unit of inquiry. The online meetings with scientists help the students learn from experts in their field and take their learning beyond the four walls of the classroom.

This year, we met with Kate Fiedler, a plant scientist, and Hope Bretscher, a physicist, to learn more about the concept of energy.

The scientists gave a short presentation about their areas of expertise and then answered the children's questions. Not only did the students learn about what it is like being a scientist and the concept of energy, but they also were able to ask other questions about the universe and share their curiosities and wonderings. Some of their questions included:
-
What is it like to be a scientist?
-
What is something that inspires you?
-
What will plants be like in the future?
-
How does music help plants grow?
-
How is light energy made?
-
What would happen if we used kinetic and potential energy together?
-
Why does energy exist?
-
What are photons made of?
-
Can we stop energy from transforming?

The scientists gave thoughtful, age-appropriate answers and the children were engaged and concentrated throughout. Afterwards, they also had a chance to share and consolidate their new knowledge with their peers. I would thoroughly recommend ‘Skype a Scientist’ for students of all ages.
