Observational Drawing to Stimulate Our Curiosity

Last week Year 3 spent two sessions doing very careful observational drawings of mountains, linking in with their unit on how the world works.

Students were encouraged to really look closely at the image of the mountain and pay special attention to the shadows as they give the drawing a realistic, 3D look.

As they looked carefully, we found lots of interesting questions emerging about mountains. Why are the rocks jagged? Why are hills smooth and curved? Why is there more snow on one side of the mountain? What makes the cracks in the mountains? Why are the peaks always pointy? Why is it windier near the top?

Plenty of great discussion and theorising came out of these conversations and I think you’ll agree the artwork was spectacular!
