The Philosophy of Provocation in the PYP

In the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), provocations play an important role in supporting inquiry-based learning. A provocation is a carefully designed experience, question, or stimulus that sparks curiosity, encourages thinking, and invites students to explore ideas in meaningful ways.

Rooted in the belief that children are active participants in their learning, provocations are used to activate prior knowledge, challenge assumptions, and inspire deeper inquiry. They may take many forms, such as open-ended questions, images, artefacts, stories, experiments, or hands-on experiences. Rather than providing answers, provocations encourage students to ask their own questions and take ownership of their learning journey.

In Year 2, students are currently engaging with a provocation linked to the transdisciplinary theme How We Organise Ourselves. This provocation has been designed to spark curiosity about how communities function and make decisions.

Through discussion, exploration, and questioning, students will begin a deeper dive into learning about how communities create transportation systems that meet their needs. This inquiry encourages students to consider purpose, design, and impact, while making connections to real-world contexts they experience every day.
