IB Geography Grows at RIS - Fieldtrip to Rome’s Historic Centre
The IBDP Geography programme continues to grow at RIS. This year, I was proud to bring 18 young geographers to the historic centre of Rome for their IA fieldwork.
Our Year 12 students brought along questionnaires that they had created, along with a bipolar environmental survey, in order to collect data for their IA reports. They are exploring three geographical models related to tourism (i.e., Butler, Plog, and Cohen).

On this sunny spring day, tourists from around the world filled the city centre and provided plenty of potential participants for the students’ interviews.

The students put forth a great effort, finding the courage to approach strangers and conduct their interviews. They exemplified many attributes of the IB learner profile today. They were all risk-takers, communicators, inquirers, open-minded, and reflective.

Not only did they collect a lot of interesting data for their fieldwork, but they have also worked towards their own personal growth as scholars and have strived towards global citizenship.

The fieldwork offered a meaningful opportunity to develop their investigative and analytical skills while deepening their understanding of the challenges facing one of the world’s most visited historic cities.
