How we learn through Play in Kindergarten

In Kindergarten it’s all about Play and everything that comes with it. We are exploring different forms of play, such as alone or together, inside or outside, and with or without materials. We are paying extra attention to the rules of playing together. The children are learning that they have to share and take turns and are learning how to ask for a toy nicely, and how to say “please” and “thank you”.

Play involves planning and working together and the children are gradually improving when it comes to that. Another aspect of play is creativity and the students are showing creative ideas in various ways. With empty iPad boxes they are making walls, houses, beds and other items.

Role play is also an important part of play. Our Kindergarten children love to dress up! We have been having fun exploring different jobs, such as a doctor, police officer and firefighter. We have also built a practice complete with a waiting room and with books to read in class. We have been waiting patiently until we can see the doctor.

Using different kinds of fabric we have also been dressing up as our favourite characters such as Elsa from Frozen. We even started organising shows with a theatre.

Our hair salon is also very popular.

As always the children loved to help making play dough.

Naturally, outdoor play is part of their learning experience as well.

We still have a lot of hours of fun together to look forward to!

Happy greetings from a playful KG bunch, Teresa and Marie-Louise

In the Early Years at RIS, the natural curiosity of children is a motivating source for learning. Play that is associated with academic learning is an act of ‘inquiry’. We believe inquiry connotes critical and reflective thinking that promotes the attainment of the intellectual capacity of every child.  Learn more.
