Year 2 Inquiry: Outdoor learning, language skills & a hint of magic

Recently, Year 2 began exploring this question as they looked at the fictional text Bog Baby by Jeanne Willis. After listening and discussing the text, students worked with descriptive vocabulary to explain what a bog baby is, how it looks, what it needs, and how it acts.

Using their imagination, they created their own bog babies using clay, water, and finally paint.

Since the theme of the story is to help the bog baby identify what it needs to feel safe and happy in its environment, Year 2 students looked for places outside in our school environment where their bog baby would be happiest.

Students returned to them to ensure they were safe and happy in their new homes. One day, they discovered one missing! The children created a ‘Have you seen’ poster to ask for help to locate the missing bog baby.

This topic combined outdoor learning, language skills, a hint of magic, and started students thinking about how environments create safe places for other creatures (and what we need to do to keep those places safe).
