Year 10B Explore Healthy Relationships and Challenge Stereotypes

In a recent session at RIS Rome, Year 10B students discussed the essential skills for maintaining healthy relationships, whether with friends, family, or partners. Key elements such as communication, respect, and empathy were highlighted as crucial for fostering positive connections.

Students also reflected on the concept of consent and how it can vary across cultures. For example, the Italian expression "chi tace acconsente" ("silence means consent") contrasts with the modern understanding of consent, which requires clear, affirmative agreement. This led to a thoughtful discussion on the importance of respecting boundaries and ensuring mutual understanding in all relationships.

To deepen the conversation, students watched a video featuring Italian youth discussing whether it was acceptable for girls to go to nightclubs without their boyfriends. Most boys in the video said no, which prompted our students to reflect on whether this response stemmed from a sexist mindset or a desire to protect, especially if clubs are perceived as unsafe. The discussion revealed a high level of critical thinking and openness among the students, who considered both cultural attitudes and safety concerns.
