A Busy Term of Wellbeing
This term at RIS has been vibrant and meaningful, with a focus on fostering a supportive, caring environment for our students. From engaging initiatives to targeted support, we continue to prioritise wellbeing for all.
Kindness Counts
November was dedicated to kindness, with students practising Random Acts of Kindness, including peers in activities, and showing gratitude to the school community. They were encouraged to extend these actions at home as well!
We reinforced anti-bullying messages, with younger students embracing the slogan “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully” and older students focusing on the Three Rs: Recognise, Refuse, and Report. Cyberbullying was a key theme, helping students understand the importance of staying safe and respectful online.
Additionally, Middle and High School students participated in Mental Health Awareness Week, learning about anxiety and coping strategies to build resilience and empathy.
Digital Wellbeing: This Term’s Focus
With technology playing such a significant role in our lives, this term spotlighted Digital Wellbeing. Through assemblies and PSHE sessions, students learned to balance screen time, recognise signs of overuse, address cyberbullying, and seek help when needed.
A highlight was the Middle and High School Poster Competition, which inspired creative reflections on digital habits. Winning posters were showcased, celebrating student thoughtfulness and artistry.
We also introduced the Digital 5-a-Day framework to help students:
- Connect – Connect with family and friends on and offline
- Give to Others – Help others balance their time online and report inappropriate content
- Be Active – Take time away from screens and get moving
- Be Mindful – If time online is causing you stress, take a break. Ask for help if you need it
- Get Creative – Use digital tools to learn new skills and develop new patterns
Our parent workshop on digital wellbeing was a great success, with engaged conversations on how to support children in this area.
Celebrating Our Student Wellbeing Ambassadors
The Student Wellbeing Ambassadors have been instrumental in promoting Digital Wellbeing, from organising the poster competition to running the Wellbeing Stand at the Christmas Fair. Their enthusiasm brought concepts of wellbeing to life for families.
Additionally, students from Years 3, 7, and 13 shared insightful perspectives on Digital Wellbeing in these videos, showcasing the value of student voices in shaping our programme.
Staff Wellbeing Team
Our volunteer Staff Wellbeing Team continues to drive improvements across the school. Recognising the challenges Year 13 students face, the team launched daily lunchtime drop-in sessions, providing academic and personal support. The team also continues to offer Walk and Talk sessions for any students who need it; and the school counsellor is available two mornings a week to support those who need additional help. The team’s passion for promoting wellbeing ensures that emerging needs are addressed proactively.
Looking Ahead: Healthy Relationships
Next term, we’ll shift focus to Healthy Relationships, exploring themes like respect, boundaries, and communication in age-appropriate ways. We encourage you to discuss these ideas with your children at home. We’ll also host a parent workshop on this topic, sharing practical tips for fostering healthy relationships.
Thank you for supporting our wellbeing initiatives. Together, we’re creating a thriving and caring school community.
