Welcome to the Future: The New Space Lab
Special Inauguration Week Article
At RIS Rome International School one of our key objectives is to remain at the forefront of educational innovation.
Aligned with the Globeducate schools' STEAM agenda, the Space Lab embodies the commitment of bringing together our cutting-edge approach to teaching and learning. This empowers students to have hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, art/design and beyond.
The Space Lab is an exciting expansion of our state-of-the-art campus, designed as an interactive hub for students to explore coding, robotics and AI, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and technological expertise.
Our approach ensures that students don’t only learn about the future—they are empowered to shape it.

What is the Space Lab?
The RIS Space Lab is an innovative learning environment designed to provide students across the school with hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). Students can experiment, create, and explore emerging technologies, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.
The Space Lab emphasises the inter-disciplinary nature of the IB programmes, ensuring that students of all ages, and across all subject areas, have the opportunity to explore:
- Coding & Robotics – Learn programming and automation skills
- AI & Data Science – Explore artificial intelligence and data-driven problem-solving
- 3D Printing & Engineering – Design and print real-world models
- Collaborative & Hands-On Learning – Work on interactive projects in a high-tech environment
STEAM Week Line-Up: 10 to 14 March 2025
RIS STEAM Week exemplifies our dedication to providing a holistic education that prepares students to be global change-makers who shape the future. We look forward to involving the entire RIS community in celebrating innovation, creativity, and learning during this exciting week.
- HiAi! Initiative Participation - Students will delve into artificial intelligence, exploring its potential and ethical implications, learning from the experts in the Globeducate family
- Robotics Workshops - Leveraging resources such as Raspberry Pi computers, and Arduino kits, students will build and programme their own robots
- LEGO® Day - Various classes will take part in fun and active coding activities
- Maths Day - Stimulating challenges for all ages in celebration of the International Day of Mathematics, celebrated globally on 14 March
Artificial Intelligence and Education: A Standout Success Story
STEAM in Action - Hands-On Learning Experiences
Innovation takes center stage at RIS with the Space Lab. This exciting campus expansion is designed to provide students with immersive, hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) and was inaugurated during RIS STEAM Week (10–14 March) with special guests - Elpis Anastasiou, a pioneer in STEAM education, and Prof. Matteo Russo a professor in Robotics.
IB Geography students recently embarked on an innovative STEAM project that blends technology, data science, and urban planning to create a 3D-printed model of Rome. This large-scale representation, measuring 1.5m by 2m, utilizes Earth observation data to map the city's buildings, rivers, and key landmarks.
In Elementary School, LEGO® Education is already bringing STEAM to life! Through robotics, engineering, and coding, students develop teamwork, problem-solving, and innovation skills in a fun, interactive way—encouraging them to explore, experiment, and engineer solutions.
Last week, Year 2 students at RIS wrapped up their unit of inquiry on transport with an exciting STEAM project that combined art, technology, science, engineering, and mathematics.
We’re excited to share the latest on the HiAi! Initiative—a pioneering program from Globeducate and Pascal International Educations, uniting students across Globeduate family of schools, to explore AI’s potential and ethical impact.
