Middle/High School
Rome International Middle/High School is currently in an exciting period of growth and change. The High school started in September 2007, our Middle/High School Principal, Mr Martin Waanders, joined us in August 2008. The school obtained IB Diploma Programme authorization in May 2009. Our Grade 12 students have already begun their two year Diploma Programme with new, highly specialised teachers employed from all over the world. We are also a candidate school for the MYP and will work towards implementing the programme starting with this year’s Grade 7 and aiming for MYP authorization in about three years' time. Both these internationally acclaimed programmes are gradually replacing the British National Curriculum at Rome International School and offer the very best in education to our students, giving them the chance to enter Universities anywhere in the world with the International Baccalaureate Diploma, which is awarded at the end of Grade 13 (American Grade 12). We continue to offer the British GCSE programme to our students of Grade 10 and 11 and are an official GCSE exam centre. For more information on the MYP and IB please see relevant section on our website 'What we offer at Rome International School' Rome International Middle/High School offers its students two fully equipped, modern science laboratories, large computer laboratory with adjoining library/resource centre, art room, music and drama room; all for exclusive use of the Secondary department. Classrooms are fitted with interactive whiteboards and there are a further 15 computers for M/H student use in the annex. Sports take place in the large, covered basketball court and nearby Villa Ada and include basketball, football, badminton, athletics, netball, fitness and track events. There is an extensive programme of after-school/lunch time activities offering a wide range of interests. A homework club gives an opportunity to those students who prefer to study together after school to do so, with a teacher supervising if help is needed. French and Spanish are offered as third languages with Chinese and Latin lessons available after school. Teachers are specialist and expert in their subjects. Teacher councils for every year group and an Academic Board ensure the highest of standards and smooth progression between Grades. Standards are high and exam results good. Residential trips have included Paris, Vienna and Valencia. This year we plan to take the older students even further afield and to invite students from other schools in other countries and continents to visit us in Rome. For further information about the Middle/High School, please contact us. Early Years Department/Elementary School In September 2008, Rome International School celebrated its 20th year of providing excellent educational services in a caring environment. The past 20 years have seen many changes in our school, growing from a small Nursery and Elementary school of 21 students in our first year at our previous site on Via Morgagni, to one of the largest and most prestigious International schools in Rome with almost 400 students. Until recently RIS has followed the English school system with adaptations to incorporate an international perspective. RIS has now chosen to link with what we believe is the most prestigious of all educational systems, the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). As from the 1st September 2008 we are a Candidate School for the IBO Primary Years Programme, for children from 3 to 11 years of age, with the goal of becoming an authorised IBO PYP school in 2010. We believe that the IBO Mission Statement, in its aims ‘to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through inter-cultural understanding and respect’ is exactly what we are aiming for with our students, in preparing them for the world of tomorrow. For more information on the PYP see the section on our website ‘What we offer at Rome International School’. The heart and soul of our school is one of nurturing, encouragement, challenge and support. It is these intrinsic qualities that draw students, staff and parents together, and create a strong sense of belonging to the Rome International community. As we face the future we know that as we continue to develop and adopt the IB PYP programmes, our sense of school community, which is so vital to the heart and life of Rome International School, will grow from strength to strength. The Elementary school has its own music room and computer laboratory with adjoining library/resource centre. There is also a computer in each classroom and many rooms are fitted with interactive whiteboards. Physical Education classes are held in our covered basketball court and a large variety of activities are offered as after school clubs. Residential trips are organised each year for grades 3 to 6. The Early Years Department has a separate playground to the Elementary School children. For further information regarding the Early Years/Elementary school please contact the Principal. |
