Early Years

At Rome International School, we follow the Curriculum Framework of Early Learning Goals which provides children with opportunities to broaden their learning abilities.  Therefore, the teachers at RIS aim to promote all areas of the Curriculum Framework to children from an early age.

Early Years Department

The Early Years Department at Rome International School is made up of 3 sections -

1.       Kindergarten/Nursery composite

This is a group of children aged 2-3 years who work with experienced Early Childhood staff.

2.         Kindergarten

These are classes made up of a maximum of 25 children aged 3 years. Each class works with experienced Early Childhood staff and assistants.

3.         Transition

These classes consist of a maximum of 25 children aged 4 years who work with experienced Early Childhood staff and assistants.

As soon as children are born, they thrive on learning about the world around them.  As they grow their ability to learn grows with them.  In the Early Years department the children are encouraged to think for themselves, to innovate, to create and to seek and solve problems.  They are unique individuals, eager to make sense of the world, to develop relationships with others and to extend their skills.  All children bring creative potential to their learning and we believe that it is important to build from this.  The English language is the medium through which we teach all subjects.  It is our language of instruction.

In the Early Years department at Rome International School, the teachers aim to –

  • Provide a warm, supporting environment
  • Encourage respect and cooperation
  • Value and encourage individual differences
  • Explore different ways of thinking
  • Actively involve the children in their learning
  • Meet the needs and interests of individuals

The learning environment is constantly evaluated to ensure that appropriate opportunities are provided for learning through play in the key aspects of children’s development and learning, taking into account interests, motivation, previous experience, stage of development and the balance between free play and activities directed by adults.  Important celebrations during the year are also an important part of the Early Years’ programs at Rome International School.  We have dress-up parades for Halloween, Carnevale and Easter as well as winter and end of the school year concerts.

The teachers in the Early Years Department have found that after a clear settling-in period in a secure environment, young children will develop positive relationships with other children and adults, which will lead to increasing self-esteem and promote growth and development.
