Every Thursday from 4 till 5, our young talented footballers have been honing their skills in preparation for the tournaments throughout this academic year. Improving on their positioning, teamwork and technical abilities the team has come together and have impressed on every outing so far.
The penultimate time the Grade 6 team played at Ambrit, school they were narrowly beaten in the final and finished second. Last Saturday the 29th of January our team won the tournament and lifted the trophy with a dazzling display of football that pleased both players and spectators. One neutral observer said: “I would have paid to watch this team play, they were fantastic today.”
We entered 4 teams into the tournament and each one did a great job in the finals, the Grade 3 and 4 teams finished 3rd in their respective groups while the Grade 5 team reached the semi final stages, only to lose out by our Grade 6 team.
The success of the teams came down to the community spirit that has been created between the parents, players and staff. Mr Fei, who managed the Grade 4 and 5 teams, did a fantastic job with his motivation, knowledge and dedication, the teams repaid him with their hard work and success on the field. Mr Mancini, who had the arduous task of guiding our incredibly enthused Grade 3 side, did so with composure. Mr Scantoloni, who steered the Grade 6 team to the trophy, did so with commitment, professionalism and enthusiasm; the players are indebted to you all.

Chemistry club: proving chemistry is fun! |
Chemistry: it’s… well, let’s just say it’s not for everybody. The classes of Chemistry teacher Giulio Pompei are not very big, and he knows why: “Chemistry is not very popular, because it has the reputation of being a difficult subject. But chemistry is also fun!” And he’s intending to prove so this year.
2011 is the International Year of Chemistry, a ‘worldwide celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind’, as the organisation of the year puts in on their web site. It was officially opened on the 27th January in Paris, by well-respected teachers and researchers in the field. The aim of this special ‘chemistry year’ is to promote chemistry and raise the public appreciation and understanding of the discipline. Rome International School is joining in, and we’re the only school in Rome to do so.
In order to put the spotlight on Chemistry, we will start a Chemistry Club. This club will develop a number of extra-curricular activities and events, and they will be all about research and conversation. “It will be a brainstorming club... and it’s going to be fun!” It’s a knife that cuts both ways: it will raise attention for Chemistry in the school, but it should also put Rome on the map in the chemistry world. “The calendar with official events for the IYC features events in Sidney, or in Lisbon... Rome should be on that list to. So that’s where I want our events to go.”
And at the end of the year, there will be a science fair, hopefully. With posters on the research, maybe a video presentation, homemade pigments and photographic paper for sale... and ok, maybe some explosions. “Just because it looks good. Like in the Braniac TV show...”
Chemistry Club will be part of CAS for interested students. It’s open to students from Grade 8 and up, and to interested parents and staff. If you’re interested in joining, just send an email to
