Developing a passion for learning A message from the Headteacher Dear Parents, Students and Staff,
It's been another eventful week here at school and although most events are still taking on a virtual format, there is plenty of planning and organisation happening for the up-coming Globeducate events. Our students will be participating in the Globeducate Music Festival, Eco Week and Model United Nations. Internally, there are a range of unmissable events lined up, starting with the MHS virtual concert next Friday, followed by the IB Visual Arts Exhibition on 16th March. Sports days for the Early Years/Elementary classes are also being planned for later in the Spring term.
Our students never cease to impress and it is clear to see just how active they are in their learning. The educational experience at RIS inspires a love of learning. Our approach, based on the IB ethos, provokes curiosity so that students ask questions about what they are learning in order to make connections with the world around them. It is not about memorising facts and figures; it is about learning how to think. Reading this newsletter, I am sure you will see this emphasis, from the early years to the senior school.
I wish you all a restful weekend.

Tue. 16th March IB Visual Arts Exhibition Fencing in the fresh outdoors With the promising signs of Spring around the corner, Elementary classes took their Fencing lessons outdoors and had great fun practising their skills. Students have made real progress since Fencing was introduced as a curricular option in September and we have the world-class team at L'Accademia d' Armi Musumeci Greco 1878 to thank for that! Imaginative Play in Year 1 Here we see Year 1 Pandas making good use of simple resources; they don't need much to use their imaginations! A Student Like Me: A teacher learns what it is like to be a Middle School student "Student (or pupil) shadowing is a process by which a teacher goes through the school day as a member of the class in order to gain a glimpse into the student experience. Mr. Mongare offered this opportunity to our teachers and I readily volunteered. On Wednesday, February 24, I spent the day as a Year 8 student.
Period 1: Science
Mr. Mongare led me into the Science lab to be met by the confused faces of my new Year 8A classmates. He explained to the class that I was a new student and assigned a member of the class to look after me." The Blueprint The student magazine created to represent the voice and opinions of the student body. Welcome to the February edition of The Blueprint magazine. This month we have compiled a list of articles that touch on some of today's most pressing topics such as Black History and self-love while also touching on lighter topics such as movie recommendations and pop culture. So sit back, relax and enjoy this month's release! Editor's note by Karen, Y12 Using role-play to learn in KG Kindergarten class has completed their topic on Winter and the focus now is on role-play. After setting up their own grocery shop with items brought from home and chosen from our 'loose parts storage', the children are busy shopping every day; learning to take turns, learning about numbers, money and new vocabulary! This week, they measured the length and width of the football pitch (in metres) in pairs. They then used their measurements to calculate the perimeter and area and were astonished about the size! - Ms Svensson Thinking mathematically in Y2C Pupils in Year 2 are having fun exploring and building on their knowledge of numbers and seeing how they change as they get bigger. Our learning has been very busy with plenty of action, talking, singing and doing! MHS WEEK 2 TIMETABLE - 8 TO 12 MARCH 2021 A message from the Middle & High Principal Dear RIS Community,
I would like to start by thanking all the staff and students who have submitted their video recordings for the upcoming MHS virtual music concert. It is scheduled to be shared via Zoom on Friday 12th March at 19.30. We are just putting the finishing touches to the production and hope that you will all be able to join us for an hour of music and surprises! We hope that this will be the first in a series of virtual events that will showcase the huge talent on offer within our community. I hope that between now and the end of the year we might even be able to explore the possibility of a community choir event (similar to the many already recording during lockdown). Other events being explored include an evening of poetry, a celebration of 'internationalism' (showcasing the large number of nationalities within our community) and many others. Please do let me know if you would like to be involved in any projects or if you have any ideas. Ideally, I am looking for ways to involve parents, staff and students so any ideas you have that provide that opportunity would be appreciated. Our Year 13's have returned to their normal routines having successfully completed their mocks. Well done to our students and many thanks as always to our wonderful staff for their hard work. Only a few weeks to go now for our older students... keep working hard!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Mr Mongare MHS Virtual Concert 12th March, 19.30 Don't miss 18 performances by students & staff! Gene expression and Epigenetics: A tutorial by IB Biology students
Year 12 IB Higher-Level Biology students have made a remarkable tutorial on gene expression and epigenetics. Tremendous effort and a superb result, well done! Mr Baldoni IB Visual Arts Exhibition, 16th March
An important event that celebrates the high standards achieved by our most senior students and represents the culmination of two years' study. The format of this year's vernissage on the 16th of March will accommodate both in-person and virtual visits. Invitations to the event have been shared with the families of our exhibiting students with their specific appointment times. Message from the IB Coordinator
Last night, I had a very pleasant meeting with Year 11 parents to introduce the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Several Year 11 students attended as well. They all are very excited about joining the Senior School and they already shared some plans of university choices.
Year 13 students have finished the Mock exams and are back in classes for the final few weeks. On Wednesday, they had an amazingly reflective assembly on their thoughts about the mock exams and the weeks ahead. The maturity of discussions and quality of the insights was truly representative of how our students have developed the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. We also discussed 'smart strategies' for the final improvements of learning outcomes and the Y13s are determined to put the best efforts into the 'last sprint'! My very best wishes to you!
