Taking action, Working together for a better future Newsletter, 6th November 2020 A message from the Headteacher As you are all aware, our High School students are now immersed in our online learning programme, and even though they have adapted remarkably quickly to this change, we do miss them. You, as parents, have supported us every step of the way and for this I am truly grateful. I know it is hard not to physically be in school, but knowing that we have your trust as educators, and the collective determination and resilience we have will allow us to weather the storm. At a time when we must constantly adapt how we communicate, one constant is the importance of your feedback. You view school life from a unique angle, and sharing that with us will allow us to positively build upon what we have achieved, always with the best interests of our students at heart. Please do continue to share your thoughts with us as we sail these seas together. I wish you all a relaxing and safe weekend. Mr Thompson This week in....Transition
Transition class has had a blast with their new playground markings, made by our talented teaching assistant, Ms Sarah Ward. The circuit incorporates a range of active games such as hopscotch, star jumps, an obstacle course and other fun activities that contribute to the development of our students' motor skills, social skills and coordination. This November, the Eco Council invites you to take part in Take action and shape your world! 2019/20 PTA fundraising summary
The PTA's fundraising efforts were interrupted last year because of the COVID-19 related school closure. Despite this, our amazing Parent-Teachers Association managed to raise a total of €3,172 from the two events held in October 2019 (Halloween bake sale, see photo below) and December 2019 (Winter Fair). Thank you so much to everyone who participated in these events.
This amount has been donated equally to the two charities (€1,586 each) as voted by the school community in October 2019, "Education for All" (Kenya) and "Progetto Frammenti di Luce" Bambino Gesu Foundation (Italy). We hope to be able to re-start the activities of the PTA as soon as we are able to! Dates for your Diary

A message from the Middle & High Principal Dear RIS community,
A short message from me this week and one of thanks. Thank you for your support of this week's parent/ teacher meetings. They were very well attended and all the feedback received so far has been very positive indeed. If you were unlucky enough to not be able to secure a meeting, please do contact the member of staff directly, by email. They will be very happy to secure an online meeting with you as soon as is manageable. I would also like to thank all our staff for their hard work preparing for these meetings. They do take up a lot of staff time and I would like to acknowledge this, publicly. Have a great weekend.

Update from the IB Coordinator
It is unfortunate that our IB students have to go on remote learning again. They had just started to enjoy their school-community-life again!
Your IB Coordinator, Ms El Sheikh Ms Hetzer, Vice-Principal of the Middle/High School and IGCSE Coordinator, offers her advice to High School students on how they can create a balanced routine during this period of distance learning. Middle School P.E. curriculum adaptation Keeping students active, healthy and happy! Year 8 make full use of the fitness trail & terraces
Given the new ministerial decree, we need to modify our P.E. programme for the next half term. As such, we will alternate outdoor fitness classes with indoor lessons. Inside the gym, besides fitness, we will also play badminton in order to have the opportunity to learn by playing! As regards badminton, the school has all the equipment needed in order to respect all the rules of social distancing. Regarding fitness, in addition to free-body workouts, we would like each Middle School student to bring with them a small personal tool, the skipping rope, in order to avoid the use of any shared tool. RIS considers Physical Education an essential part of our experiential learning, particularly at a time like this where the possibilities of practicing sports after school are limited. For any doubts, do not hesitate to contact Mr Fulgaro. Update from the Middle School Coordinator
Dear RIS Community, As we are approaching new restrictions, it becomes more important than ever to work together as a team: students, families and teachers. Teachers at RIS are working hard to make sure that online learning for High School students will be as smooth as possible. Following the most recent decree, Middle School students will carry on coming to school and attend lessons as normal. Should you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mr Baldoni Y8 make the most of the fitness trail surrounding the school Year 8 Geography students take action against Climate Change
At Rome International School, our goal is not for our students to be passive learners, but to be active and reactive in the world. With this in mind, Year 8 Geography students have begun group projects which aim to take action against climate change. I am very intrigued by the ideas that our students have come up with so far.
